Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has criticized a deal struck by President Uhuru Kenyatta with some governors from North Rift region on the handling of matters of maize farming by government.
He termed the deal a public relations gimmick meant to deceive farmers that something is being done to improve their welfare.
“It is shameful for leaders from maize growing regions to be part of this PR exercise being propagated by the government through Ministry of Agriculture to hoodwink our farmers who look up to us for redemption from the tentacles of poverty,” Murkomen said.
The senator issued five demands that the government should fulfill. One is for NCPB to revert to buying maize from farmers, and the return of subsidized fertilizer.
Murkomen asked the government to schedule a convention of tea, coffee, maize, and dairy farmers so that issues affecting those crops can be discussed exhaustively.
He also demanded that farmers who delivered their maize to NCPB three years ago and have not been paid should get their money immediately.
